Golf Pitching can often times make or break your score when out on the course. This vital aspect of your game, together with your drive can cut valuable shots off of your score. Unfortunately though not many practice this aspect of their game, as compared to driving and putting.
Think about the times you have landed in trouble, behind the trees or water and suddenly faced with a daunting chip or pitch over the hazard, sometimes already lacking the confidence or certainty of the shot ahead. This is why golf pitching is essential, it is arguably more controllable and can really help in getting the ball closer to the pin, and often times help in getting out of trouble.
Here are some tips that might help you in your golf pitching strokes:
- Don’t worry about where the ball is going, take your golf pitching stroke and shot and deliver a solid shot – the rest of the fourball or your partner can keep an eye on it for you.
- Focus on hitting down on the ball to get that required loft and height to either get over the hazard in front of you or to get the necessary height when ‘the dancefloor’ is at a premium (for the non golfers – that means the green).
- Use the club that’s either right for you or one that you have confidence in, some prefer loft wedges, others will stick with the pitching wedge, and then some prefer the sand wedge. Whatever works best for, and you are the most comfortable with is the right club for you.
- Having said that, this will take some practice, so perhaps next time you are at the driving range, devote some time to your golf pitching, aiming for different heights and lengths – this will allow you to get the right club. You will also develop some valuable skill too.
- Ball positioning is often an issue of debate, and once again playing around with a few positions will allow you to learn how high and / or far the ball goes with each respective position. Although the ball should at most times be closer to the center of your stance. Length or distance of the golf pitching stroke or chip shot will determine your backswing, normally about shoulder high.
- Your body weight should also be kept slightly more towards the front leg, to the center of your stance. Far too many people make the mistake of leaning back in a golf pitching shot, usually brought about by the golfer wanting to see where the ball is going to land.
Golf pitching is a crucial element of your overall game, and I am sure you will agree, wherever you can shave off a few shots on your overall game score will certainly help. Too many people practice and push themselves when it comes to the drive and longer distance shots with irons, take some time to hone your short game skills, as with golf pitching strokes and ability and you will definitely see a difference in your game.
